*OPINION PIECE* BUMMER

Dukes Chat usually speaks of only positive news concerning Duquesne University Athletics, but a comment on Dukes Football's recent loss to Iona College deserves some words.
In no way is the quest for a ninth straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship over. After all, Iona defeated the Dukes in 2006 as well, only to blow the championship late in the year. And give credit to the Dukes for rebounding that season to earn a share of the crown despite that loss -- its toughest, really, of the program's NCAA Division I-AA tenure. Upsets happen.
But with all due to respect to the 2007 Dukes -- they're still a good team -- this was no upset. Iona is better right now.
Of course, the Gaels don't have as much going for them future-wise as Duquesne does, but that means nothing in 2007.
Here's hoping that the Dukes can shake this off like they did last year, but again, they'll need some help.
  For now, what a bummer.

I care about the team and all of the players and assistent coachs (or at least most). But the #1 problem to the Dukes Football team is the head coach. This bum needs to go back to having problems of Sand in the vagina, not championships. How is it that a girls basketball coach is coaching this squad? This school and this team deserves better and must have better because there is a future for this team unlike the rest of the MAAC. I am pretty sure I am not he only one that believes this Schmit should be out.

Dukes Chat appreciates the candid nature of this comment but does not approve of the sexist remarks.

Well stated post... I respond to the 2 comments by saying this: Jerry Schmitt is a problem at Duquesne. His attitude is one that has no businesses running what once was a great 1-AA football team. His track record of running the westminster team into the ground after he took that program over has held true with the Dukes. After saying that the team should be ashamed of themselves for allowing themselves to be taken to this level. This team, as well as last years team has no toughness about them. They're all a bunch of crybabies who want to blame everyone else but themselves. The players are the ones who are dogging the sprints, skipping lifting, and taking this "i don't care" attitude with them where ever they go. It is a discrace what has happened on the bluff

If the coach gave them a reason to care, that would help. The coach has no fire under his ass. When he is mad his quote is "you got to be kidding me." Schmitt is a loser and has a loser attitude. Playing under him, I would know. He has no idea what he is doing or why he calls what he calls. He is a silly man that likes to pretend that he can win. He needs to be fired as soon as possible and get some JuCos in here to start dominating again.

I think it's funny that all players under him blame him. He is a problem, no doubt. But for the players to roll over and just accept losing because their coach doesn't have a winning attitude is terrible. I do agree they need to bring some JuCo's to the bluff because the players now aren't getting it done.

If you were a player you would understand. A coach isn't suppose to get run over by players such as the top WR Chuck Hocker. (speaking of which, that kid is in for a major shocker when he doesn't get drafted). But Schmitt is the #1 reason. The players have no reason to play because he is that bad. You want a good example, look at the Patriots and look at the rams. End of discussion on players folding on a coach. If a coach sucks, then the players have no reason to play. They no they will lose no matter how hard they try. Schmitt called 2 pass plays on the 2 yard line.... So please shut up and stop defending a girls basketball coach trying to coach men in a real sport.

Obviously we need new players at Duquesne... this type of attitude is the reason why they have fallen so far. They feel the need to blame everyone else but themselves.

Blame everyone else? Are you kidding me? Who is the one that is suppose to call the right plays? Who is suppose to kick your ass if you mess up? Who is suppose to be there saying "good job!" when you do well. Who is suppose to be there when the team is losing and take on the blame? Who is there when everything is going well to take the glory? THE HEAD FREAKIN COACH! So shut up and get lost.

Once again... they blame anyone but themselves.

Schmitt? That has to be you. No one else breaks it down to something that simple unless simple minded. You are 1 of 2 of the most simple minded fools I know.

The players have no heart, period. Schmitt needs to go, but so do the players.
